Academic Program

Weekly/Cyclical Schedule
In late July, we asked all parents to select the learning model, Hybrid or 100% At-Home, they will want their child to follow at Cardinal Hayes in the fall.

Students whose parents selected the Hybrid option will report to Cardinal Hayes two days per week, either Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday, and will attend a schedule of four 60-minute class periods for in-person instruction in half of their courses on each day.  Students will complete asynchronous assignments for all classes on the days they do not report to the school building.  No in-person classes will be held on Wednesdays.  In addition to continuing asynchronous work on Wednesdays, students will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with their teachers during virtual office hours.

Students whose parents selected the 100% At-Home option will complete remote work on all days.  On the days when their classmates are attending in-person, these students will complete assignments including, but not limited to, viewing prerecorded mini-lessons and self-paced activities.  On Wednesdays, these students will have the same opportunity to meet one-on-one with their teachers during virtual office hours.

In the event that we are required to close the building due to health requirements or government mandate, all students will transition to Remote Learning.  During periods when the school is in Remote Learning, students will attend regularly scheduled synchronous lessons four days a week.  Students will engage in synchronous lessons up to twice a week for each class and complete asynchronous work on the other days.  Wednesdays will continue to feature all asynchronous work and opportunities for students to meet one-on-one with their teachers during virtual office hours.

On Campus Experience
Students attending in-person classes under the Hybrid model will complete a health screening upon arriving at their designated entrance of the school and then report directly to their first class of the day.  We will not use lockers for this school year, so students will need to carry their school supplies and jackets or sweatshirts with them throughout the day.  Classrooms have been configured to limit capacity and ensure social distancing.  The day will begin with a 10-minute period for prayer and announcements and then transition into a schedule of four 60-minute class periods.  The time between periods has been extended to allow for adequate distancing for students changing classrooms and includes a brief break between the first two periods of the day to allow for a supervised stretching and mask break. Lunch will be eaten in classrooms as part of an extended third period. At the conclusion of the school day, a school administrator will dismiss each class individually and each teacher will escort their students to the designated exit.

Distance Learning
As part of our move to emergency distance learning protocol in March, Cardinal Hayes loaned Chromebooks to students without access to a computer at home in an effort to keep our student body connected and engaged in learning.  The faculty collaborated with each other on Schoology, sharing ideas and best practices in the interest of making our emergency distance learning experience a success.  Knowing that all of our models for this school year involve remote components, Cardinal Hayes hopes to provide each student with their own Chromebook for the full school year.  Additionally, teachers were encouraged to pursue professional development over the summer in order to learn and develop strategies to maximize learning during both the hybrid and remote learning portions of the 2020-2021 school year.

100% Coverage of Instructional Time
Our Hybrid, 100% At-Home, and Remote Learning schedules maintain 100% of instructional time that students would have had in a traditional fully in-person schedule.

Course Offerings
We plan to offer our full complement of courses, including all core academic classes and electives, in all three of our models.  All students will continue to meet New York Board of Regents requirements for graduation.  Physical education and music instruction classes will be held with modifications designed to meet the safety recommendations of New York State and the Archdiocese of New York.  In addition to a faculty-wide effort to incorporate social and emotional learning activities during class time at the start of the year, physical education classes will meet in alternate weeks under the hybrid model.  Group guidance sessions will replace physical education in the other weeks.
